Year 2

Welcome to Year 2

Welcome to Year 2!

We have an exciting year planned for you.  Each term our Knowledge Skills Organisers will be emailed out to parents so that you have an overview of what your child will be learning.  This will enable you to discuss what your child is learning in class and help you support them on their journey through the year.

Year 2 is split into 2 classes.

2P will be taught by Miss Pollard  who will be supported by Mrs Wynn

2S will be taught by Mrs Shellam and will be supported by Mrs Broome.

Uniform and PE

Please ensure that on your PE days you come in wearing the correct items. PE will take place twice a week.  If your child’s ears are pierced, they need to remove the earrings or bring tape to cover them up to avoid injury.

Reading

Reading is one of the most important skills your child will learn.  They need it every lesson and in order to access the world around them including using iPads and Xboxes!  Although your child may  have grasped the basic ability to read, they need support to help understand what they are reading.  We expect all children to read 4 times a week at home and to discuss the texts with the person they read to.  This will help develop their comprehension skills no end.  A signature or comment is welcomed in your child’s reading record as we can then see how they are getting on. Children may be asked to read a book more than once as this promotes develop reading fluency and in turn comprehension.  Some children may come home with books linked to the phonics they are learning too which will further support their learning in this area.

Read, Steady, Read is our exciting competition across the school.  Children are encouraged to read a book off the list below and complete a review based on the book.  This review can be a written review, a picture or a short video on SeeSaw explaining what they liked/disliked about the text, who their favourite character was or even a description of the setting.  For each review, your child will receive a ticket which will be placed into the draw that takes place at the end of each half term.  The children will then be able to choose their own book from our Book Vending Machine.

If you have any questions or queries, please come and talk to us at the end of the day or email the school office and we will be more than happy to help you.

Maths

On Fridays, we have our Froggy Maths test. These tests are timed to five minutes. This is to assess the childrens' quick recall with a specific Maths focus. You can find your Froggy Club here, should you wish to practise.
