Welcome to Year 1
1P and 1C
Welcome to Year One! We have two classes in Year 1 - 1P and 1C. Miss Pugh teaches 1P and Miss Crilly is teaching 1C. 1P is supported by Mrs Jones every morning and Mrs Parry. 1C is supported by Mrs Taylor on a Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday and Mrs Probert on a Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. We are very lucky to also have Mrs Saunders who volunteers to read with the children on a Monday and Wednesday.
Children need to bring their book bags in every day and need to read with someone at home daily. The children will be given two books to take home, one phonics based and one reading for pleasure. If the reading for pleasure book has been read at home, we will change it for a new one and the phonics book will be changed every Monday, Wednesday and Friday. We have a reading chart where the children get a smiley face for each time they have read at home and there is a comment in their reading records. If the child has four or more smiley faces on a Friday, they will be rewarded with a treat.
Children are taught to read and write letter sounds in a daily phonics session. The children are taught graphemes (letter patterns) for the different phonemes (letter sounds.) In June, Year 1 pupils will sit the Year 1 phonics test, a statutory requirement of the DFE. The children will complete practise phonics’ tests before this so that they feel comfortable with the format.
Year 1 will have two P.E. lessons each week and one of these lessons will be on a Tuesday afternoon and the other taken by Mr Rivers on a Thursday morning whilst Miss Pugh and Miss Crilly are on PPA. Mr Hipkins will also teach the children on a Thursday morning. Please ensure that your child does not wear earrings or if this is not possible provide them with tape to cover them up. Children with long hair are also expected to have their hair tied up. Please send in a pair of dark coloured tracksuit bottoms for our outside PE session and make sure all PE items are labelled with names.
If you have any concerns or queries please talk to us when we dismiss your child at the end of the school day. Alternatively, an appointment for a longer discussion can be made through the school office and we will endeavour to see you as soon as possible.
